What Makes the New OTUL Beta 200 down Underquilt Exceptional?
When sleeping in a hammock, a traditional sleeping bag gets compressed between the body and the hammock fabric, significantly reducing its insulation capability on the bottom and sides. This can be uncomfortable even during warm summer nights. The OTUL underquilt creates an insulating layer of warm air around the hammock, ensuring a peaceful and comfortable sleep. It replaces the need for a traditional foam mat or self-inflating mattress.
OTUL Beta 200 is the latest model in the OTUL series. It measures 215 × 120 cm, weighs 540 g, and provides comfort in the temperature range of 8 – 14 °C. It contains 200 g of down, the ideal amount for typical conditions from late spring to early autumn.
Collaboration Lesovik × Małachowski
Lesovik teamed up with the renowned manufacturer MAŁACHOWSKI, a specialist in down equipment, to create a new range of products designed for hammock and ultralight camping. The result of the collaboration is the OTUL Beta underquilt series in both summer and winter variants with an original technical solution in the form of innovative β-chamber construction.
What are Β-Chambers?
The unique construction of the OTUL Beta underquilt uses chambers shaped like the letter “B”. When wrapping around the hammock, the “bellies” of these chambers connect and provide better insulation. In laboratory tests, this construction outperformed traditional H-chambers with the same amount of down. The central chambers have a larger volume, allowing better loft where it’s most important, namely in the shoulder, back, and side areas.
Comfortable and Secure Attachment
OTUL is compatible with any hammock. Hanging and adjusting takes only 90 seconds, and the insulation can be adjusted directly from the hammock thanks to easily accessible tensioners. There’s no need to get out of the sleeping bag. Thanks to the β-chamber construction, the underquilt can also be hung “inside out” to reduce thermal comfort, which is appreciated during warmer nights above the recommended temperature range.
Tunnels with drawstrings at the top and bottom prevent cold air from penetrating under the hammock and create space for shoulders and feet, which are prone to heat loss. The multi-chamber design ensures lasting and maximum loft.
What is the UNGAPER System?
UNGAPER is a smart buckle that lifts the underquilt by up to 10 cm and eliminates gaps in the shoulder and foot areas. It minimizes heat loss and increases insulation efficiency.
More than just an Underquilt
Thanks to the quick-release system, OTUL can be transformed into a down blanket in seconds. It can replace a sleeping bag or serve as a cover during breaks, meals, or rest. Whether you’re waiting for your morning coffee or watching the sunset, you’ll stay comfortably warm.
How to Ensure I Don’t get Cold in a Hammock?
The underquilt should always be used together with a sleeping bag or top quilt suitable for the conditions and with appropriate base layers. The underquilt does not replace a sleeping bag nor increase its insulation capabilities. The recommended temperature range is based on testing, tester feedback, and user experiences, but individual perception of cold may vary depending on condition, wind, or humidity.
Sometimes you might feel cold at 18 °C, other times a lighter sweater is enough at 10 °C. Before spending the night outdoors, always:
- eat and drink well
- avoid excessive fatigue
- choose appropriate clothing, stay dry, and protect yourself from the wind
